New York City Events for the Week of December 8th

Monday, Dec 8: Lovers of Toni Morrison are probably already aware that she has a new novel, A Mercy. See Morrison read and discuss her recent work tonight at 8 pm at the 92nd St. Y. Tickets are $19; call the venue to purchase them. 92nd and Lexington Ave., 212-415-5500.

Tuesday, Dec 9: Those SLC-ers who didn’t get enough of Michael Ian Black last year have another chance to see him. Black and the rest of comedy ensemble Stella are performing tonight at 8 pm at the Nokia Theatre in Times Sq., 1515 Broadway near W. 44th. Call 212-930-1950 about tickets.

Wednesday, Dec 10: No holiday season is complete without a trip to see the Nutcracker. Whether you’re aiming to pay a lot of money and see a prestigious ballet company, or if you’d rather try out a less traditional production, there is a show for you. The New York City Ballet is always reliable, and you can find tickets online for as cheap as $20. Shows are at the David H. Koch Theater. Lincoln Center (Columbus and 65th.) Call 212-721-6500 for information.

Thursday, Dec 11: With conference week looming, you’re undoubtedly itching to blow off some steam by looking at reptiles. Why not go visit the lizards and snakes at the Museum of Natural History? Tickets are $18 for students with ID, and shows run from 10 am to 5:45 pm. Central Park West and 79th St., Manhattan.

Friday, Dec 12: It’s no secret that Sarah Lawrence students are interested in gothic fashion. The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology is hosting an exhibition featuring 75 works from prominent designers, and it’s entirely free. The museum is open between 12 and 8 pm, and is easily accessible by subway via the 1 or the C, E. 27th St. at 7th Ave., Manhattan.

Saturday, Dec 13: You can run around a darkened winter wonderland of real live zoo creatures, and you don’t even have to go into the city to do it. The Bronx Zoo is turning its lights off to cut down on carbon emissions and hosting an eco-friendly “wild winterland” involving animal petting and ice-carving, among other activities. Tickets for adults are $15, and the party kicks off at 11:30 am. Bronx River Pkwy. at Fordham Rd., the Bronx.

Sunday, Dec 14: This season can get very expensive, but luckily some of the city’s greatest holiday-season activities are free of charge. Make sure to stop by the Christmas tree at Rockefeller center on your way home from gift shopping. The lighting ceremony has already occurred, but the tree is re-lit each night until 11:30 pm. 30 Rockefeller Plaza, Manhattan.

Remember: If going into the city on a Saturday or Sunday, SLC students can take the Met Van, which is free and drops off/picks up riders in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Van leaves Andrews Parking Lot at 11 am and 1 pm both days, and is now first-come, first-serve, so arrive early to secure a spot.
