New York City Events for the Week of October 20th

Monday, Oct 20: The Whitney Studio Party is tonight. Too bad all the tickets are sold out, but you can get on the waiting list if you’re really crafty (or you can just e-mail the Whitney). My guess is it requires an ID card because there will be cocktails. If you’re still interested or just want to check out the scene, it starts at 9 pm at the Whitney Museum, 945 Madison Avenue (at East 75th St.), Manhattan, (212) 671-5310. 21+.

Tuesday, Oct 21: The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival starts today and ends on Saturday. The activities start early in the morning at 9 and go until 8 at night. Finally, a reason to get up early and go to the city! The Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South, Manhattan. Also at other venues across the city; check the schedule for more details.

Wednesday, Oct 22: It’s a wonderful fall day in New York — why not join a protest to stop police brutality, repression, and criminalization? Dress in black and meet at 4:30 pm in Harlem. Harlem State Office Building, corner of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd (7th Ave.) & 125th St., Manhattan.

Thursday, Oct 23: Interested in photography? Well, how about contemporary photography? If the answer is “duh,” maybe you should consider going into the city to see The Future of Contemporary Photography sponsored by the New York Photo Festival. The movie starts at 1 pm, but if you can’t make it, there is a showing every day until Sunday. Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, 655 West 34th St., Manhattan.

Friday, Oct 24: The American Folk Art Museum is having a masquerade ball for free! That’s right, every Friday the AFAM holds an event called Free Music Fridays, during which patrons can explore the museum, have a cup of coffee, and listen to music for free. The difference is that this Friday, you can go dressed in costume! The music starts at 5:30 pm and ends at 9 pm. American Folk Art Museum, 45 West 53rd St., Manhattan, (212) 265-1040.

Saturday, Oct 25: Sarah Lawrence conference projects sending your chi out of whack? Well, The Integral Yoga Institute of New York is having a special session of chanting with the visiting performer Jai Uttal. The $30 entry fee is steep, but it might be worth it to find some relaxation in these hectic times. Word. Begins at 7 pm. Integral Yoga Institute, 227 West 13th St. (between 7th and 8th Ave.), Manhattan, (212) 929-0586.

Sunday, Oct 26: Know someone afflicted with Alzheimer’s and want to help? The 20th Annual New York City Memory Walk is happening today! It’s a two-mile walk, and check-in is at 9 am. Riverside Park, West 97th St. and Riverside Drive, Manhattan, (646) 744-2997.

Remember: If going into the city on a Saturday or Sunday, SLC students can sign up for the Met Van, which is free and drops off/picks up riders in front of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Van leaves Andrews Parking Lot at 11 am and 1 pm both days, and students can sign up outside the Student Affairs office (2nd floor of Bates).
