Bird Dance

knives of light
a cicada’s hum
stars on skin

swallows fall
from ground
to sky

drawing circles
on evening’s
pale face

I can grow
and sing
and cry

sucking up
the smoke of
knee-deep night

impressing
my mortality
upon the dirt
