Months

Autumn, October,
Wind, cloud,
Sky that shows through
     yellow leaves.
Sun slants beyond our sight,
Leaving us with twilight
     rays at five.
Autumn, November,
Rain, grey,
Chill that creeps up
     through our sleeves.
Winter, December,
Black, white,
Darkened day and
     lighted land.
Snow sings when the drifts blow high.
Crystal on the clothes-line
     mow. The time
Winter. Remember
Old year,
Sleep with snowflakes
     in your hand.

This poem was originally included as one of three under the title “Three Poems” in the Winter 1947 edition of the student magazine Dimensions.
