Up and down, up and down,
Over, all over this terrible town.
Up and down — each time I’ll go
Just a bit more slow;
And once I hope I’ll know
Why it is I go
Up and down, up and down,
Seeking what in this terrible town?
What and where? Up or down?
Which and when in this terrible town?
This piece originally appeared in New Strung Bow, a book of poems written by Sarah Lawrence students that was published in 1932.
