Going Places

When you see me
walking up High Street,
past those dreaming spires
this Michaelmas,
heading for the Rad Cam to study
obscure historical texts,

I am the still the same girl
who walked down Main Street,
downtown rundown Darby, PA
this summer,
heading for the welfare office to tell
my caseworker:

I’m going places.
