Sadie Lou is primarily a submissions-based publication. We accept and encourage submissions year-round from current students – from both graduate and undergraduate studies – as well as alumnae/i, members of the faculty, and administration. Submissions should be sent to submissions@sadielou.net.
Guidelines
Who are you?
When submitting work for consideration, please include a note describing your relationship to Sarah Lawrence College. If you are a student, please indicate your graduation year.
Previously Published Work
We are happy to republish previously printed work, provided it is submitted to Sadie Lou by the original author. If such work is published, the original publication will be credited.
Avoid File Attachments, Please
Copy and paste your writing directly into the e-mail. For artwork and other media submissions, please submit only the following: mp3, jpg, or PDF. For video submissions, please first upload your movie to a service like YouTube or Google Video and send us the link in your submission e-mail.
Word Limits
We are not terribly strict about word limits, but the web is generally a fast medium that favors concision. Successful comment pieces are usually around the 1000-1500 mark, while essays should be well-thought out and can go beyond 5000 or even 10,000 words. If you would like to contribute to our front page blog, 200-500 words is the norm.
“Fancy” Formatting
Do not do it. Although pink blinking text can be used to artistic effect, this is not the site for it. For poets, for whom spatial layout on the page can sometimes be crucial, we have no choice but to bow to technical limitations. We can accommodate only the simplest of alignment concerns and the lightest of typographical flourishes. Specific indentation is out, and we are constrained to the measure width of the site.
Footnotes
We do not accept them. In the interest of readability on the web, please use MLA style inline documentation (MLA 52). Reference a keyword – usually the last name of the first author listed under Works Cited – followed by the relevant page number, parenthetically, inside of punctuation. No p, p., or pp. For page ranges, hyphenate without a space (MLA 42-43).
Fiction & Poetry
Pieces to the Fiction & Poetry section should be submitted with the idea that the Fiction & Poetry Editor may respond with some feedback prior to publication. Many writers choose to take advantage of this opportunity, as it presents a mutually beneficial environment for teaching and learning the craft of writing. However, we understand that some writers may not. If you are interested in a simple “yes” or “no” response regarding the status of your submission, please indicate that within the body of the e-mail.
News Articles
Should probably be submitted to The Phoenix or The Standard. This site is interested in what the Sarah Lawrence community is thinking, creating, and being influenced by. We will occasionally cover campus goings-on in the blog, which is a distinctly shorter format than traditional newspaper articles. If you are interested in joining the blog team, or have a shorter piece you’d like to contribute, please e-mail us.
